Scrunchie from Off-cuts, Blue/Grey Organic Cotton
Did you know our scrunchie is sustainable? Not only is it made out of 100% organic cotton, but also it's created from the off-cuts of our Cassidy "Palaka" plaid shirt and Emily "Palaka" plaid dress.
In Hawaii, there is a traditional patterned textile called "Palaka" plaid. Historically, it was a thick cloth from England, with the pattern created in two colors (usually white and a color), which made its way to Hawaii to make shirt uniforms for the field and plantation workers. Like the ubiquitous denim textile that was also used for workers in mainland America, the "Palaka" plaid became mainstream in the Hawaiian culture and is used widely today from shirts to dresses to home decor.
We honor this cultural treasure and translate it into sustainable fashion by introducing a third color to modernize the pattern, as a yarn-dye with a heather grey, blue, and white.
