Hundreds of years ago, the Iranun were pirates wreaking havoc to the rest of Southeast Asia. Between their piracy activities and trade with China, silk made its way to the Philippines and the Iranun, where they adapted it to their indigenous costume, particularly their convertible "malong" - which the tribe wore as a dress, skirt, or its more casual versions worn as a hooded cover-up, used as a bag, and more. Today, instead of silk, indigenous Iranun artisans (who are no longer pirates!) have evolved their ancient practice of weaving using modern yarns - rayon, polyester, & lurex - to achieve the same exclusivity once reserved for royalty. As the malongs are one-of-a-kind, the yarns are not bought in bulk, but instead, purchased by indigenous artisans from surplus yarns produced by other brands.

Our Laguinda skirt is an exquisite & luxe example of next-level upcycling. We called it "Laguinda" as a play on the words "lagi" (Visayan) or "palagi" (Tagalog) which means "always", and "maganda" (Tagalog) which means "beautiful". The skirt's denim yoke is taken from our Samantha reclaimed denim shorts, which is then combined with textile handwoven by indigenous Maguindanaoan Iranun artisans in the Philippines after sending out the handmade fabric to be carefully pleated, here in the USA.

Easily worn with a tank top and sandals for a more casual flavor for summer evenings, a sweatshirt and sneakers for when it gets chilly, or dress it up with a silky tube top or cami paired with some heels and a shawl for a night out, our Laguinda skirt is definitely a showstopper anywhere you go, "always beautiful" - Laguinda!
